Hotellegenden

4 x 52 minutes

arte (MDR, SWR, SR)

There is hardly a metropolis or a coveted place in the sun that cannot boast a legendary traditional hotel. The very term "grand hotel" exudes a special magic. The hotels are not only architecture, family history and tradition, but also chroniclers of our times. Great personalities came and went in Europe's grand hotels at a time when travel was still celebrated. Hotels were the hub of social life for the upper classes. And so great legends have grown up around these hotels, surrounded by great splendour and little anecdotes. People lived, loved, suffered, celebrated and died in them. Taboos were broken, hearts were broken, far-reaching political decisions were made and some of the world's literature was written.  The hotels have survived two world wars, seen democrats and despots come and go, and provided space for social change in the 20th century.

"Legendary Grand Hotels" enters its second season! A four-part glossy series that promises plenty of glamour, amusing anecdotes, (art) history and exciting glimpses behind otherwise closed doors: Who were the visionary founders whose pioneering spirit helped the hotels achieve their current reputation? What family stories and tragedies took place behind the walls, away from the guests? What architectural masterpieces and tricks of the trade are hidden within the walls?
